You don't have to look far out of London to find exciting things to do. Why not start your 2012 with a visit to Essex?

Essex gets a hard time. People’s perceptions of white stilettos, Ferraris and fake tan have only been amplified by programmes like the Only Way is Essex, while the beautiful countryside, rivers and endless things to do often get overlooked. So, below is an overview of a list of things to do in Essex and its surroundings that will hopefully make you love this beautiful county…

• Enjoy a country pub meal by the water

What could be better than dining (or drinking) with friends while watching out for waterway wildlife and colourful narrow boats? Essex has plenty of waterside pubs and restaurants, just buy yourself a map, have a stroll along one of the rivers and see what takes your fancy.

• Have fun with friends paintballing

There are some fantastic deals in Essex to be had. Delta Force Paintball in Upminster, is an amazing place to go and experience the gorgeous Essex woodlands, while you shoot your friends with paint. Groupon often has deals on this, so it is worth continuing to check the site, as this experience is plainly unmissable.

• Chill at a spa

You’re not in London, so won’t pay London prices at Essex spas but you will get the same level of high quality treatment. Re-charge spent batteries and loosen tired limbs with either a Full Body, Hot Stone or Full Sports Massage delivered by a fully qualified massage and complimentary therapist. Again you can find some terrific vouchers on Groupon, so keep checking the site.

• Kayak down a river

If you are feeling slightly adventurous, then sea kayaking might be ideal for you, and what’s better is that you do not have to trek all the way to Wales to find it, as it is another fantastic thing Essex has to offer. Based in Rettendon, Nomad Sea Kayaking gives guidance along the waterways of Essex and the coastline of the North Sea, as well as the occasional expedition to the Sea of Tranquility.

• Split your day between Essex and London

Essex is easily accessible from London, so you may want to look at deals in London and split your day between both places. After an adventurous day in Essex, you could hop on the train and seek an evening of entertainment. East London or the city would be ideal as these are the easiest accessed from Essex. One place that is notable is, Proud Cabaret, modeled on a 1920s speakeasy, this is an elegant new City destination which offers elegant dining and entertainment in surroundings which evokes the illicit glamour of a bygone era.
