Set in 170 acres of parkland and boasting 21 buildings of major historical importance the Royal Gunpowder Mills mixes fascinating history, exciting science, and beautiful surroundings to produce a magical day out for all.
Scientific methods developed at the Royal Gunpowder Mills, Waltham Abbey made British gunpowder the envy of the World. From the development of Congreve’s Rocket in the 1800’s to the bouncing bomb of WWI, Waltham Abbey has always been at the centre of scientific research. Eventually becoming a centre for research and development, work done here was at the cutting edge of rocket technology during the late 20th Century.
