New Southend Summercare Carnival 2012 Procession Route Announced

Southend Carnival Association has today announced the new route for the procession in the afternoon on 23rd June, having changed the usual to avoid a clash with the Olympics.

This year the Southend Summercare Carnival Procession will begin in Southchurch Park East at 15.30 and pass along Lifstan Way, Eastern Esplanade, Marine Parade, Western Esplanade to the junction of Western Esplanade and Shorefield Road.

Chris Charles, Chair explained “the Carnival will be part of large free Community Event called Sparks will Fly Southend which is taking place across the town on that day. The route has been selected to give the most interaction with the other events.”

It is hoped that by changing the date it will give more people the opportunity to take part in the event as this will be the first-time the event is being held in term-time.

Chris continued “for the last few years we have struggled to attract marching bands to take part, as many no longer take bookings in August. Since the date change was included on our website at Christmas we have had enquiries from 8 bands asking to take part, the only thing that stops us booking them is finding the money for them to attend.”

The focal part of the procession will be the Southend Carnival Court. If you are aged 14 – 22 and are interested in being Southend Carnival Queen or Princess and having the opportunity to represent your town whilst supporting local charities visit www.southendcarnival.org.uk. Applications will be accepted until 31st January.
