Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary has been so named in memory of the first horse we rescued. Sadly help came too late for him, but the tragedy of Remus dying through wilful neglect provided the spur needed by the now formed charity to save others from a similar fate.
The Sanctuary was formed in 1983 following the plight of Remus, who was starved for up to four months in a field, having been stolen by a horse dealer. Then he was left tied to a lamp-post outside the yard that he had been previously stolen from. But now he was emaciated, a mere shadow of the lovely horse he had once been.
Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary aims to provide lifetime help and care for horses, ponies, donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs & cows, who are victims of physical and mental abuse, be it as a result of ignorance or malicious intent. The animals are our prime concern and are treated with the utmost respect. Animals are never euthanased for reasons of age or infirmity alone. Nothing is spared to give them every chance to thrive into old age.
At Remus we are very mindful of how lucky we are to have such a beautiful area of Essex for our Sanctuary. We are very committed to caring for our environment and the wild creatures, birds and plants that share the land with us. The Sanctuary land and parts of the buildings are home to many species of wildlife, birds, foxes, hedgehogs etc.
Seasonal Strolls
Join us on our short walk, learn about the sights and sounds of nature around the Sanctuary and what they mean. See the Sanctuary’s conservation work and all our animals and view inside the lovely and historic Buttsbury Church.
Indulgence Day
A popular annual event. Come along and see the many therapists from all over the South East. Try the therapies for yourself or watch the many displays in our barn. Watch how our animals react to them and learn how much benefit they gain.
Not sure which therapies work - try them for yourself, learn about them and watch our animal's reactions – they don't lie!!
