Sunday 7th & 14th March 2010
Snowdrop Sundays at The Gardens of Eastern Lodge
The Gardens of Easton Lodge will be throwing open their gates for four Snowdrop Sundays from 21 February at the start of its 2010 season.
The official opening on Sunday 21 February will be conducted by local MP Sir Alan Haselhurst who will ‘cut the ribbon’ at 12 noon before making a tour of the famous snowdrop carpets. He will be joined by Brian and Diana Creasey who have worked tirelessly to restore the gardens over recent decades.
The annual ‘Snowdrops’ event has become a must-see feature of the garden lovers’ calendar as the many thousands of blooms herald the advent of spring.
This year, after such a snowy winter, they’ll be more welcome than ever.
The Gardens of Easton Lodge were designed by Harold Peto in the early 20th century for the Countess of Warwick – “Darling Daisy” to the Prince of Wales before he became Edward VII.
Opening hours for the Snowdrop Sundays are 12 noon to 4pm (last admission at 3pm). Tickets cost just £2.50 for adults, children enter free. A volunteer team will be manning the gates and serving home made soups, hot chocolate and other drinks and cakes in the courtyard of Warwick House to sustain visitors who venture out to see the first signs of spring. Snowdrops ‘in the green’ will also be available for purchase for those looking to start – or add to – their own snowdrop carpets.
Further information is available from the recorded information service on 01371 876979, online at www.EastonLodge.co.uk or by emailing enquiries@eastonlodge.co.uk.

Special Sunday Openings for Edwardian Garden in 2010
Lovers of garden design and cultural history will have a rare opportunity to experience the enchanting atmosphere of one of the jewels of Harold Peto’s garden designs in a series of special monthly Sunday openings this year at the Gardens of Easton Lodge.
The gardens, in Little Easton near Great Dunmow, Essex, were one of the most important creations of the Edwardian designer Harold Peto. His commission in 1902 came from “Darling Daisy”, the Countess of Warwick, who regularly entertained society guests there including the Prince of Wales before he acceded to the throne as Edward VII.
Visitors to the open days will catch a rare glimpse of a bygone age amid the tranquil atmosphere of the gardens whose full restoration is the long term aim of its Trustees.
The gardens have only recently been re-opened as part of a drive towards returning them to their former glory. The open days will serve to remind garden lovers of what will be possible with the right level of support.
Despite the scale of work still to be undertaken, the loveliness of the gardens continues to shine through. From its origins in 1302 as part of a vast deer park, the 23-acre haven is notable for its natural beauty and ever-changing landscape.
Designed in Italianate style around Warwick House which is set in the grounds, the gardens were maintained until 1950, after which time nature took over. Tantalising glimpses of those designs have been resurfacing since 1993, when the restoration project began. Today’s visitors can see Peto’s Italian Sunken Garden and the herringbone and cobble courtyard, plus other examples of his work. A small museum in the Dovecote describes their history and heyday in detail.
The once-a-month Sunday openings during 2010 will be on 18th April, 16th May, 20th June, 18th July, 22nd August, 19th September and 10th October.
Entry to the Gardens of Easton Lodge costs just £2.50 (children free). Picnics welcome. Home-made refreshments are on sale during opening hours (12 noon to 6pm). Children’s activities are being organised on some of the days (see website for details). Further information is available from the recorded information service on 01371 876979, online at www.eastonlodge.co.uk or by emailing enquiries@eastonlodge.co.uk.
The Gardens of Easton Lodge are located just outside Great Dunmow in Little Easton, off the B184 (Great Dunmow to Saffron Walden road). Follow the brown heritage signs.
