The Thatchers Arms is situated on the Essex & Suffolk borders boasting stunning views over the Stour Valley. Under new ownership since November 2006, The Thatchers has steadily gained a reputation for fantastic fresh locally sourced food & a great selection of local ales.
We are passionate about everything we do. Our Head Chef Mick Illingworth prepares our locally sourced menu on the premesis, from steamed puddings to steak & ale pies, real gravy, home cut chips & homemade custard. Our beers come also from local breweries; Adnams, Crouch Vale, Mersea Island and many more, even our crisps are from Wormingford, just down the hill.
The Thatchers has always been a local pub and this tradition continues with a blend of drinkers and diners from all around the local area. Everybody is welcome, whether you want a quiet pint, a snack or a 3 course meal. You can sit and admire the fabulous views or challenge a friend to a game of backgammon, if you're lucky you might find somebody playing the piano or reciting tales of local history, you'd be amazed what goes on in the country...
Food
We are proud to use local suppliers and source much of our menu direct from the producers. Please see our main menu or our friends page for a list of our suppliers.
We have a lunch and evening menu available Tuesday to Saturday full of Pub favourites like Fish & Chips or Homemade Pies, at lunchtimes there are also some lighter dishes & sandwiches. If they don't tickle your fancy then have a look at our ever changing specials board full of fresh fish, game and more adventurous dishes.
Our set price Sunday Roast menu changes weekly, 1 Course £9.95, 2 Courses £12.45 & 3 Courses £14.95. There is always two joints, including a 28 day hung Rib of Beef, with real gravy & all the trimmings plus a fish & a vegetarian choice. As always, the specials board caters more adventurous appetites.
Lastly but by no means least I must mention our Homemade Desserts. Mick isn't letting the recipe out for his Steamed Puddings, but you might find yourself torn between them and the Chocolate & Amaretto Mousse or The Chocolate Brownie. Our desserts board changes all the time, hopefully with something for everybody including a British Cheeseboard with Homemade Red Onion Chutney...
Drink
We are just as passioanate about drinks as we are about food. We have a great drinks range from Real Ales & Fine Wines to World Beers & Single Malts. We also have a range of local fruit juices from James White in Ashbocking & farm pressed apple juice from Whites Farm in White Colne.
We keep Adnams Bitter & Crouch Vale Brewers Gold on the bar and our guest ales change regularly, mainly from local microbreweries such as Nethergates, Mauldons & Mersea Island. We also have a large selection of World Beers, fruit beers from Belgium, Weiss beers from Germany & beers from American Microbreweries.
Our wine list is put together by Adnams who are renowned for their expertise in wine importation. The Mersea Island Vineyard also supply us with a fantastic dry English white wine, Island Dry.
