From their origins in 1302 as part of a vast deer park, the 23-acre Gardens continue to enchant visitors with their natural beauty and ever-changing landscape. Formally redesigned by Harold Peto in 1902 in Italianate style, the Gardens were maintained until 1950, after which time nature took over. Tantalising glimpses of those designs have been resurfacing since 1993, when the Restoration Project began. Today's visitors can see his Italian Sunken Garden, and the herringbone and cobbled courtyard, plus other examples of his work. Additional creations by the Creaseys include the Living Sundial (our Millenium project), the Dark Pool and the Shakespeare Border.
For some visitors, the appeal of the Gardens can be the glimpses of Peto's stunning, formal design, temporarily conquered by nature, but now being restored to its former glory. For others, especially at off-peak times, they offer peace and tranquillity, a chance to leave behind the 'hustle & bustle' for a while.
Visitors return time and again to see the Bosquet blanketed in snowdrops and aconites, followed by daffodils & narcissi. Later still, they admire the roses and wildflowers and, with so many trees (both native and nonnative), autumn can never fail to inspire!
The Gardens have become an established venue for a range of Arts driven events. These range from the creation of new work by professional artists inspired by the Gardens' history and landscape, to hosting professionally produced open air theatre and opera events. Our award-winning 'Big Draw' weekend in the autumn is particularly popular with families.
Easton Lodge is a great place for a family picnic or party and offers a warm welcome to children. They can use the large swings, expore our 23-acre haven, and discover the wildlife - both real and topiary - including our own ducks, chickens and even peacocks!
We often host special events for families such as the Father's Day Treasure Hunt and our Discovery Days.
Please be aware that the Gardens feature ponds and pools so please keep children supervised at all times.
Thank you...
