Description

Old Leigh has a wealth of history as a maritime village, be it as shipbuilders or fishermen. With ships from Leigh taking part in the defence against the Spanish Armada and more recently the evacuation of Dunkirk there is something for everyone in this little gem of a Heritage Centre in the heart of Old Leigh.

Leigh Heritage Centre is situated in the Old Smithy in the High Street of the Old Town of Leigh-on-Sea and is a mine of information for all, even those with only a passing interest in the history of the Town and its traditions.

There is a permanent photographic display tracing Leigh’s history from Doomsday to the present day, an exhibition of blacksmith’s equipment, Granny’s kitchen and information on Leigh pottery, the fishing industry and local families.

A big attraction at the Centre is the restored Plumbs Cottage. This Victorian fisherman’s cottage has been lovingly restored with Lottery Grant assistance and now offers a wonderful insight into the lives of a very large family who crammed into its small quarters.

The Centre has a small sales area where you can purchase a selection of books related to Leigh, postcards, historical maps and Leigh fridge magnets as well as other items for the children.

The Heritage Centre is run by the Leigh Society who caters for school groups and provides them with talks on Leigh and slide shows.

The Society also has access to a large database of information relating to the Old Leigh fishing families and is happy to help with anyone researching their Leigh family history.

Entrance to the Centre is free and the Centre volunteers are very knowledgeable and willing to help with any queries. The Society attempt to keep the Centre open everyday but if you are planning a special visit it is best to call in advance to be advised of opening times.

Leigh Old Town is noted for its seafood and cockle sheds can still be seen at the western end of the High Street.

The Endeavour, one of the Dunkirk Little Ships is moored in the Old Town and there is information nearby to tell you all about her brave journey to France.

There are plenty of eating facilities in the Old Town, and indeed in the Town at the top of the Hill where stands St Clement’s Church with its memorial to the men of Leigh who went to Dunkirk but never returned.

Leigh Broadway is a thriving shopping and eating area with something for everyone whatever your taste.

You don’t have to rush around in Leigh, there are plenty of places to sit and just watch the water and wait for a glorious Leigh sunset.
