Description

The White Hart Inn is about 250 years old, and is on a green known locally as Tigers Island. The 'Island' derived from the fact that when the river Wid flooded and the water rose it never quite reached as high as the pub. The 'Tigers' were the railway builders of last century who got dressed up to visit the pub each weekend, and sometimes resolved their disputes with bare knuckles in the pub precincts!

The property is a traditional Essex weather-board building, with a large single bar and an extensive conservatory The bar area is dominated by a wood burning stove and chimney stack, a welcomed source of warmth on a cold winters day. An extensive collection of beer and champagne bottles decorate the shelves around the bar and the walls are festooned with old pictures (some of the pub in days gone by, and others of agricultural scenes) and pub and brewery memorabilia.
The building was substantially extended in the seventies including a large kitchen which to this day enables food to be prepared promptly, a source of great pride and there is a good choice of items on the menu.

There are beer gardens at the front and rear and an array of birds and small animals in the stalls outside.
Liz took over the White Hart in 2002. The licensing trade is in Liz’s blood, both her late parents having been publicans, and this training really shows. She has moved, what was a comfortable local country pub, to be the epicentre of life in ‘The Tye’. This has been rewarded with numerous awards including Local CAMRA Pub of The Year 2007,2008 and Runner Up 2009.

We've done it again!!!
We've won the CAMRA Local Best Food Pub 2009

Two key events during the year are a stunning Summer Beer Festival with over 60 beers, ciders and perries in a Marquee that puts the Chelsea Flower Show to shame and a smaller Winter Beer Festival during November.

There's a fine selection of real ales at the White Hart with house beers coming from local champion brewer Mighty Oak (Oscar Wilde Mild and IPA) and regional stalwart Adnams (Best and Broadside).. Liz, ably assisted by Barry, the cellar man, Tye dweller since birth, keeps them all in perfect condition. Apart from this selection, which would get the majority of pubs a fair write-up in the pages of GBBG, Liz always has at least 8 real ales serving. They are changed regularly and are poured direct from the barrel, in the Tap Room behind the bar.

The White Hart has a reputation as a really good place to eat, with the emphasis on using only quality produce sourced locally when available.

Food is available 7 days a week with a wide range of meals and snacks. A selection of 'Daily Specials' are featured on a huge Blackboard that hangs over the fireplace in the main bar.
