Description

The Salvation Army - Hadleigh Farm has owned and farmed the 900 acres of land which surround Hadleigh Castle for over a hundred years. This is a mixed comercial farm aiming to demonstrate conventional farming as well as organic farming with 600 acres of crops and 300 acres of organic grassland and Hereford cattle.

The Rare Breed Centre opened in mid 2004 to promote conservation and education in rare breeds. A visit to our farm gives you the chance to learn about, get close to and even feed a range of rare breed Goats, Sheep, Poultry and Pigs.

The Rare Breed Centre's has a large number of activities for the family to enjoy!

Its also a fun and safe farm visit for groups of all ages lead by Access to Farms trained staff. We now have teacher packs and resources tailor made for the farm by the Salvation Army Schools and Colleges Dept. For more details please contact us.

The rare breed centre has 12 females and one male bagot goats.These are classed as critical by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) and four Golden Guernsey Goats which are classed in the minority on the RBST watchlist.

The centre also has some cute Grey Face Dartmoor Sheep and Leicester Longwool sheep, which are classed as endangered on the RBST watchlist. We also have a Leicester Longwool ram called Foxfordhill (Lenny) who is from a rare bloodline.
The centre breed and keep four types of Chicken. Our main breed are the Ixworth chicken which are classed as endangered on the RSBT watchlist. We also have small groups of Derbyshire red caps, Scots Grey and Golden Brahmas. We also have five pure breed Aylesbury ducks.

The farm keeps a herd of around 45 Pedigree Hereford Cattle. All roam the 300 acres of organic grassland that surrounds the Rare Breeds Centre.
The Herd in 2006 won a trophey for being placed 3rd in the Midlands and East England Herefords Breeders club best herd competition.
