Golf in Essex

With well over 75 Golf courses in the county, Essex has numerous amounts of small towns and villages perfect for the travelling golfer to base himself, and then start off on a golfing journey either up and down the coast or further inland.

On the coast you can take your pick of courses at the Victorian seaside towns of Clacton, Frinton or Southend on Sea. The latter being one of the finest public pay and play courses that can be found in the UK, set amongst part wooded parkland which provides plenty of mature trees to test your accuracy and club selection. Kept in excellent condition all year round Southend Golf Club has some of the more exciting and challenging Golf in Essex.

Travelling inland and just to the north of Britain’s oldest recorded town Colchester, situated in Braiswick, is the 18 hole par 70 course that belongs to Colchester Golf Club. Celebrating their centenary in 2007, the course was originally laid out by 5 times Open Champion and renowned golf course architect James Braid. Among his designs are the "King's Course" and the "Queen's Course" at Gleneagles.

Its fast tree lined fairways, four par threes and two par fives, provide a wonderful test of your golfing skills. With a comfortable club house and terrace overlooking the 18th green you can watch the golfers coming home.

An active part of Golf in Essex is the Essex PGA (Professional Golfers Association). The Essex PGA run events throughout the year which include Professional Championships and Pro-Am`s. There are opportunities for amateur golfers to participate in Pro-Am competitions and a fixtures list can be viewed on their website, if you feel confident enough to be taking on the Professionals.
