Essex is one of the most popular holiday locations in the whole of the UK and particularly popular with holiday golfers, as it boasts over 80 courses, both on the coast and further inland.
Clacton-on-Sea Golf ClubClacton-on-Sea is one of the oldest golf courses in Essex, having been established in 1892. Situated on Clacton seafront, some 14 miles east of Colchester, this par-71, 6,107 yard
Jack White-designed course has undergone numerous modifications so that it provides a testing golf challenge. The course is a diverse blend of parkland and links in design, with a multitude of challenges to test golfing and course management skills.
Royal Epping Forest Golf ClubThis par-72, 6343 yards course is public, the layout occupying the former hunting grounds of Henry VIII and the only Essex club to hold the "Royal" title. The club is near to Chingford station and can be accessed via junction 26 of the M25. The undulating course rises and falls from Chingford Plain into Epping Forest, with its wooded nature also providing assorted and intriguing golfing challenges. It is reportedly excellent value for money, with the course in good condition and suitable for all standards of players.
Essex Golf & Country ClubThis par-73, 6648 yards course, on the outskirts of
Colchester, has a USA style with plentiful hazards to catch the unwary. With 9 x par-4s, 5 x par-5s and 4 x par-3s, it is a characteristic contemporary layout. Tactical bunker positioning promises an exciting opening to the round with plenty of ongoing interest. The par-5 18th hole offers the opportunity for a "do or die" mission and is an excellent combination of risk and reward.
Benton Hall Golf ClubLocated at Witham, some 8 miles northeast of Chelmsford, is a par-72 layout, 6,574 yards in length. It represents a tough physical challenge and is recommended for fit, regular golfers. Reportedly an enjoyable course to play, its wooded, undulating nature adds to its difficulty, as do the hazards strategically "scattered" about the course. With tight fairways, well-protected greens and water in play on a selection of holes, Benton Hall is perhaps left to the more proficient players.
St. Clere's Hall Golf ClubLocated at the wonderfully named Stanford-le-Hope, St. Clere's Hall Golf Club offers an impressive golf course that will appeal to golfers of all levels of ability. Relatively short, at 5,934 yards, this par-72 course is reportedly one of the best kept in the region, with a team of green keepers maintaining its year-round playability. With fabulous, far-reaching views of the stunning Essex countryside, St. Clere's Hall becomes increasing popular with the golfing fraternity.
