St George's Day Weekend at Colchester Zoo
This is a monster weekend at Colchester Zoo. Join us in celebrating our patron Saint as we lay on a host of extra activities for you to enjoy. You can witness a special komodo dragon or crocodile training session, take a mythological train ride, make dragon related crafts in the Discovery Centre, be amazed in the medieval themed bird show or join the jester for some not-so traditional story telling.
Plus there is the hilarious re-telling of “George and the Dragon” at the Displays arena and a chance for any novice knights to have a go at slaying a dragon themselves with our Dragon piñata.

Wild Coast Weekend Hosted by the RSPB at Wallasea Island
The 17th and 18th of September 2011 will see the second of the very successful Wild Coast Weekend hosted by the RSPB at Wallasea Island. The 2 day event will be a celebration of local food, produce and arts and crafts. Live music will be provided by local band Red House and local hog roast and CAMRA beer will also be available to create what we hope will be a very enjoyable day out for all ages and interests. Wallasea Island Wild Coast is a unique place to visit and the area is rich in bird and plant life. To compensate for lost intertidal habitats elsewhere, work has recently started to recreate the mudflats, saltmarsh and saline lagoons which over the years have been lost so come along, have a great time and see the beginnings of an exciting RSPB coastal project which will be the largest of its kind in Europe.
Entrance is free but a charge will be made for parking.

RNLI Welly Walk
Join us in Harwich for a welly fun day!
There are 2 routes to choose from 8k and 5k. Both are family-friendly walks which take in the stunning coastline around Harwich and Dovercourt as well as some hidden treasures including the lifeboat museum and Redoubt Fort. Wearing wellies is optional, but we do ask every adult to raise a minimum of £42 - the equivalent cost of a pair of RNLI crew wellies. There will be a quiz along the way and fun activities at the Lifeboat Station after.

Spooky Secret Island at Royal Gunpowder Mills
Celebrate October Half Term in style at Royal Gunpowder Mills with spectacular spooky Halloween events for half term! Professor Nitrate’s evil twin Dr Gore will be hosting science shows and cooking up some horribly horrific experiments, much to the stomach-churning amazement of all those present in his crazy Mad-Lab. An array of spooky activities will be available for all ages, from face painting witches and monsters to make-your-own monster goo snot, hat making and gruesome feely boxes.
Get in the mix with some ghost busting antics and arm yourself with the Mill’s new gun-style rocket launchers for some fun monster and ghoul hunting exercises, or jump aboard one of the Military Truck and Land Train tours to explore the spooky secret island some more.

Spooky Adventure Night Walks at Royal Gunpowder Mills
The Royal Gunpowder Mill’s Spooky Adventure Night Walks will take visitors on an animated woodland walk full of characters from the Gunpowder Mill’s explosive past. Seeing the remains of buildings and equipment used to make gunpowder, the Mill Workers will tell the gruesome tales of those who perished. Featuring special effects, spine chilling discoveries and scary surprises, the first hour (5pm-6pm) will be suitable for younger children. The fear factor will be enhanced later for walks leaving between 6pm and 8pm, with super scares for older children and adults. Refreshments will be available and booking in advance is essential. Walks last about 50 minutes, sturdy footwear and warm clothing are essential, please bring a torch.

Guy Fawkes Experience at Royal Gunpowder Mills
Join us for our celebration of Gunpowder’s most infamous day in history.
Secret Island opens at 2.00pm on Saturday and Sunday, 5-6 November for two afternoons of fascinating events and activities telling the story of Guy Fawkes and his Gunpowder Plot, and concluding with a fabulous firework display.
See a light-hearted re-telling of the story of the plot in our theatre production, “The Ghost of Guy Fawkes” suitable for all ages and included in your admission price.
Meet soldiers and characters from the time, and learn about life and food of the Seventeenth Century. Have a go at our craft activities for children including how to make a Guy Fawkes lantern.
As darkness falls join in our traditional fireworks party with a spectacular 15 minute firework display, live music, and fairground rides for the little ones.
No bonfire night would be complete without something to eat, so visit our newly refurbished café, or for outdoor food our popular Barbecue and Bar will be open specially for the occasion.
NOTE: Due to the popularity of this event our car-park gets busy, so you may find it easier to park in Waltham Abbey, or if you live locally, why not walk?
