Description

A modern, multi-functional, single storey, new Village Hall opened in 2011. Designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible by incorporating Passivhaus principles, the leading international design standard for low energy sustainable buildings. The building is a working classroom of green technology demonstrating the various approaches to building design, construction and use that can be taken to reduce energy demand and CO2, thereby protecting the immediate and wider environment. The car parking blocks are made from recycled plastic instead of tarmac, bird, bat and insect boxes have been incorporated onto the external building’s walls and the toilet cubicle doors are made entirely from crushed recycled plastic bottles. To generate electricity and heat the water, the building utilises solar photovoltaic panels and solar thermal panels on its roof. In the winter, an air source heat pump compresses and extracts the heat from the outside air and distributes it via the under-floor heating and radiator system.

The main hall has oak flooring and is naturally light and warm with full length double aspect triple glazed windows. Ceiling low energy down-lighters can be dimmed for ambient lighting. A front reception area has café tables and chairs for 12 with a serving hatch to the fully equipped stainless steel kitchen. There is disabled access, parking and toilets, hearing loop, baby changing facilities and shower.

The Hall is located on the outskirts of Chelmsford, between Writtle and Blackmore and close to the A414.
