The Loughton Festival
The Loughton Festival 2010 will include all of the talks, walks, concerts and other events that Loughton’s residents have now come to expect. The theme in 2010 will be: ‘Creativity and Epping Forest’.
Talks in previous years have shown how famous artists and authors were inspired by Epping Forest. This year's main author will be Charles Dickens but we will also be highlighting the work of Hesba Stretton, Arthur Morrison and WW Jacobs who all had connections to the Loughton area.
The 2010 Loughton Festival will provide plenty of inspiration for anyone wanting to have a go at writing or sketching themselves. There will be readings, three art exhibitions and a drop-in art workshop, facilitated by the Loughton Art Group, in association with the City of London Corporation.
Last year the Loughton Festival raised around £2,000 for local charities, including Save the Children, the Loughton branches of the RBL and the RNLI, and the Loughton Resource Centre. In 2010, the recipients of the festival fundraising will be the pupils of Oak View Special School, and Dream Factory, a charity that makes dreams come true for children who are seriously ill.

Tea, Cake and the Plague - Midsummer Tea Parties with a Difference Take Place across Essex

- Loyd Grossman encourages people to bake to save historic churches -

Three Essex churches - St Martin’s, Colchester; All Saints’, Brentwood and St Mary the Virgin, Stansted Mountfitchet - will be hosting a Midsummer Tea Party - a novel fundraising event in aid of the Churches Conservation Trust, the national charity protecting historic churches at risk, taking place over 18th-20th June 2010. The three Essex churches join over 100 of England’s most spectacular and nationally significant historic churches, including those left deserted by the plague, by revealing their spine-tingling histories and showing how they can be enjoyed by people today.
The magnificent churches involved in Midsummer Tea Party are no longer used for regular worship but are among the most spectacular in the country - all classified as having exceptional national historic significance.

For example:

•All Saints in Brentwood is a fascinating church is built of mellow Tudor brick and stands in magnificent isolation above the Southend Road with wide views to the Thames. The Tyrells of nearby Heron Hall rebuilt the Norman church in the 15th century and were buried here for four centuries. Years of decay, theft and vandalism followed until the All Saints Society and the Trust rescued the church in the 1970s. There is an exquisite memorial slab to Lady Alice Tyrell (d. 1422) and a little chantry containing the tomb of Sir Thomas Tyrell (d. 1476) and his wife Alice. Also to be seen are curious galleried upper rooms in the transepts, one with a Tudor fireplace which may have housed a resident priest.
•Event Details: Sat 19th June, 2pm – 4pm, All Saints' church, East Horndon, Brentwood, Essex CM13 3LL

•St Martins, a ‘downtown’ church is a short distance to the south-east of the Town Hall. Many reused Roman bricks may be seen in its exterior, especially in the massive stump of its truncated tower. Although there is evidence of 11th century work, most of the present building grew during the 14th century, of which date are the arcades and the remarkable chancel roof. 17th century wooden balusters adorn the atmospheric south porch. Ernest Geldart, the Tractarian priest/architect, supervised a restoration of this church in 1891, but the interior has long been unfurnished, the church having been closed in 1953 and subsequently used for drama.
•Event Details: Sat 19th June, St Martin's church, West Stockwell Street, Colchester, Essex CO1 1HN

• The Church of St Mary the Virgin stands near to Stansted Hall and away from the village, in a peaceful setting despite the nearby motorway and airport. The chancel arch and north and south nave doorways date from c.1120. The chancel was extended eastward in the 13th century and a chapel was added on the north side. The brick tower was built in 1692 and the whole church extensively restored in 1887/88 by F T Dollman. Inside there are two exceptionally fine 17th century monuments with effigies: one to the wasp-waisted Hester Salusbury in her hunting clothes; the other to her father, Sir Thomas Middleton.
• Event Details: Fri 18th - Sun 20th June, St Mary the Virgin's church, Off Church Road, Burton End, Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex CM24 8UB. The tea party will include a photography exhibition called Stansted Past, a lunchtime concert for schools and a concert on the Saturday.

The aim of Midsummer Tea Party is to encourage everyone, of any faith or none, to discover and explore these remarkable buildings and find out how they can be saved for future generations by bringing them back into everyday use. Examples range from circus schools and theatres to community centres and nurseries.
Each event will be a quintessential summer tea party – unique to the communities that create them. Events are FREE and suitable for all ages. Visitors are asked to contribute for the splendid tea and cake laid on. Experts will be available to bring the history of the buildings to life and tell people how they can be used today.

Saving historic churches
Historic churches, keepers of the nation’s history and iconic features of our towns and cities are at risk. Since 1969 over 300 historic churches have been demolished and 1700 more have been closed and converted into houses and offices – lost to the nation forever.
The Churches Conservation Trust saves historic churches at risk by bringing them back into everyday use. The charity cares for 340 churches, the largest single collection of historic churches in the country. It repairs the damage from sometimes years of neglect, and works with local communities to bring them alive again. On average it costs £12,000 per annum to maintain a historic church and approximately £250,000 to repair and conserve a new church vested to the Trust and make it suitable for contemporary use. The charity must raise an additional £1.5m per year to meet its funding shortfall and continue to protect these historic churches for the nation and enable people use them today.

Loyd Grossman, Chairman, Churches Conservation Trust, said: “We want people to give in to cake temptation and head down to their local Midsummer Tea Party to find out why Historic Churches rock and how they be enjoyed today. From rehearsal spaces for bands and circus schools to places for quiet contemplation – these remarkable buildings are here for everyone’s benefit.”

“We also want people to take part. If you fancy sharing your cake creations with the world, check out our website and get in touch with a local event – and get baking!”

Crispin Truman, Chief Executive, Churches Conservation Trust, said: “We have a target to raise £1.5m more each year. We have been affected by government cuts and with the tough economic climate ahead we’re calling on local communities of all faiths to help us protect these beautiful buildings for the benefit of local people, their future generations and the nation.”

Money raised through the Midsummer Tea Parties will go towards the upkeep of each church and the Trust’s conversation and regeneration projects across England. These range from conserving rare 13th wall paintings, restoring the Church used by Charles Dickens through to sensitive modernisation of church buildings to enable contemporary use.
