Action for the Wild Continues to Support Komodo Dragon Conservation

Colchester Zoo's Action for the Wild is continuing its work to support Komodo dragon conservation in the wild by supporting the Wae Wuul protection plan in Indonesia. Since 2005, the charity has been donating €1000 annually which goes towards protecting the remnant Komodo dragon population and avoiding expansion of habitat encroachment.

The Komodo dragon is endemic to five islands in southeastern Indonesia. Four of these islands (Komodo, Rinca, Nusa Kode and Gili Motang) are part of Komodo National Park. On the fifth and largest island of Flores, expansion of human settlements and forest clearance has caused the Komodo population to decrease in the remaining Wae Wuul and Wolo Tado reserves.

During 2010, the Wae Wuul protection programme carried out work on wildlife monitoring and habitat protection and continued with the training of staff in different wildlife monitoring techniques. Population surveys were also conducted on the Timor deer and water buffalo to see how their prey species population densities affect the komodos.

Action for the wild will look to continue with the support of this project in the future, helping the Wae Wuul protection plan continue with their important work on protecting komodo dragons. For further information on this project please visit www.actionforthewild.org.
